Review "Half-Blood" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)
Half-Blood (Covenant #1)
Publication Date: October 18, 2011
Publisher: Spencer Hill
Paperback 281 pgs

Summary:
Alex is the daughter of a mortal and a Pure-Blood(decedents of the Gods). She is known as a Half-Blood, as a Half-Blood her choices in life are very limited. She can became a servant which pretty much amounts to slavery. Or she can become a Sentinel or a guard, protecting others from the Daimons that terrorize her people. There are strict rules that Half-Bloods must abide by, breaking them would mean slavery or even death. But things for Alex get complicated when she meets and starts to train with the Pure-Blood, Aiden. Above all else Half's and Pure's do not mix, especially romantically. As if things could get any worse, Alex learns some troubling information about herself as well as someone close to her. How will Alex deal with how difficult her life has suddenly become?

Review:
Alex is a very strong character. She deals with some very difficult issues but remains tough despite all that she goes through. She also has a fiery personality that tends to get her in to trouble not only with her fellow students but with her instructors as well. At times she can be slightly reckless and then in turn has to deal with the consequences of her actions. I think this has a lot to do with her age as well as her strong personality. She doesn't sit back and let things happen she takes charge even if at times she shouldn't. I'm all for a character that jumps into action since it makes the story more exciting, entertaining, and unpredictable. I also noticed a little character growth throughout this novel. She is trying to reign in her impulsive nature so that she can become a Sentinel. We can't expect her to mature over night.

Despite all the difficulties in Alex's life she is not alone. She has her best friend Caleb by her side. Caleb is a great guy. When Alex needs someone to talk to he is there for her and comforts her as she deals with the mess that her life has become. He's protective of Alex and tries to keep her fiery personality from getting her into trouble. Then there is the very hot incredibly gorgeous Aiden. Aiden is a Pure-Blood Sentinel who is known for being tough, rough, and disciplined. He has taken on the task of training Alex. But Alex is able to see another side of him. Though there may be another side of Aiden he does expect a lot of Alex. He pushes her to do her best and requires that she does so even when he is not around. It's hard to fully explain Aiden without giving too much away. I will say that he is a good influence for Alex. Alex also meets Deacon, Aiden's younger brother. He is not like his brother at all and there are reasons for that. I do hope that we see more of Deacon in the next book. We are also introduced to Lea, Alex's enemy at the Covenant. The two can't seem to get along and it seems Lea lives to get under Alex's skin. Then we meet Seth, I also don't want to say much about him. But I can say that when he comes into Alex's life he adds more complications to her already hectic life.

I know a lot of people have probably heard that rumors that Half-Blood resembles Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. I have to say I did notice some similarities but as I continued to read the similarities died out and the characters stood on their own. I was drawn into the word that Jennifer L. Armentrout created. I loved the world unfolded before me as I read. It wasn't difficult to understand as this world was explained even though there was a lot to learn about  it. It's based in our world but the Pure's and Half's mostly life separate from us and have their own rules and governing body. I love mythology so I hope to see more mythological creatures as the series progresses. I'm also really happy that this book had a pronunciation guide. I don't know how many times I have been reading and had no clue how to properly pronounce certain names or words. Half-Blood is action packed with a touch of romance that kept me wanting more. I am definitely going to be reading the next installment of this series, Pure.

Cover:
This is an amazing cover. I love the dark purple background and the different shades of purple in the flower, it just stands out and grabs my attention. I also like that this cover has a flower on the it. The cover is simplistic yet captivating. Very Nice!

Why (8)

This week I have been thinking about  my blog and  the graphics I have created. Why do I feel the need to change my blog colors, template, and graphics so often?

This is not an easy question for me to answer. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I love creating new graphics. I love playing around with colors and adding different hearts, stars, clouds, and flowers. For me it's fun to sit around and create different headers or stars to use for my reviews. I get excited when I realize a holiday is coming up and I get to change my header to fit the occasion. I'm not able to make gorgeously perfect headers but I still love doing it. I also get tired of looking at the same designs over and over again. Just like I don't like reading the same story time and again, I guess I just like to change things up.
Plus I wasn't really happy with the template I was using. It was pretty basic and I couldn't change a lot of things like the sidebar colors and background.I wanted it either dark or tranparent but there wasn't an option to change it. So I finally decided to switch to another template and I like this one much better. It has more options and now my sidebars are transparent.Yay! Also I really don't like the icons I am using for twitter, FB or Goodreads, so I will have to create new ones that I like better. Yeah, I'm probably going to spend a few hours doing that.

Of course there are some issues with my constant need to change things. It creates a lot of extra work that I still haven't done...yet. I need to go back and change the graphics for My WHY of the Week and I need to replace the old stars in my reviews with the new ones. But that won't happen until I make yet another set of stars. I think the ones I have are to similar to each other. I like having different stars for the book and the cover. So once I settle on a set of stars then I have to go back and fix things. I want my posts to look consistent.
Another downside to changing things often is I don't want people to wonder if this is my blog. So I hope to stop my incessant need to change things so people can get familiar with my blog and not feel as though it is going to change each time they come back. But, I don't want it to get boring so I can't guarantee I won't change my header and colors for holidays. Or when the mood strikes.

Am I alone in this? Do you feel the need to change your blog or do you like things the way they are? Let me know.

The ladies at YA Bound have created a hot new meme called SWOON #YABound IF you want to join in here's what you need to do.

All you need to do is pick up the book you are currently reading or just finished reading . Find what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding and your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering. Then shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag  #YABound, post in the comments, or grab the awesome button from YA Bound (above) and share it on your blog!

This week mine is from Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout:

"Little shivers of pleasure and panic shot through me as he deepened the kiss, parting my lips. I stopped thinking. I pushed off the wall, sealing the tiny space between us, pressing against him, digging my fingers into his hair. It was soft, silky. Nothing else about him felt that way.I sparked alive, my heart swelled to the point of near bursting. The rush of sensations crawling across my body was maddening. Scary. Thrilling." SWOON #YABound

Yeah I had to go with the extended scene this week. Did you find any swoon worthy scenes this week?

Review "Obsidian" Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)
Obsidian (Lux #1)
Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: December 6, 2011
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Paperback: 266 pgs

Summary:
Three years after the death of her father Katy is forced to move from sunny Florida to nowhere West Virginia. Luckily for Katy she has her books and her blog "Katy's Krazy Obsession" to keep her from going completely insane. When she meets her super hot neighbor, Daemon, things might be looking up. But unfortunately it would be better if he never opened his mouth. He's condescending, arrogant, controlling, and just plain rude. Kay strikes up a friendship with Dee, Daemon's sister, and someone is not to happy about that relationship. Daemon's attitude is not even an issue when Katy finds out her next door neighbors are Aliens. Yeah as if that isn't bizarre enough, Katy gets marked by Daemon and the only way for her to safe is to stay close to the one guy who drives her crazy. As Katy struggles to keep from slapping Daemon she realizes just how dangerous it is to get close to the Aliens living next door.

Review:
Can I just say that I loved Katy's fiery spirit. Daemon is very antagonistic towards her but she refuses to let him get away with it. She has to battle him verbally on several occasions. Many of her encounters with Daemon are verbal exchanges that were so humorous I found myself smiling constantly as I read. I gotta say  Jennifer L. Armentrout has this type of dialogue down. Though at times Katy seems unsure of herself she pushes that aside and refuses to be bullied by Daemon. Katy is such an enjoyable, believable character. She has flaws which are the reason she is so interesting and made me like her instantly. At times Katy can be a little rash trying to prove that she doesn't need to be protected, which inevitably leads to trouble. Plus she has a book blog come on how can I not relate to that. Reading about the book blogging world was just an added bonus to an already awesome book.  Katy's language also felt real and drew me into the story so much more.

Katy's new friend Dee is such a sweet character. She wants a friend and she finds one in Katy. I really like Dee, she lively and full of energy and as a reader I couldn't help but be drawn to her. Though she is totally gorgeous she doesn't act as though she is better then everyone, she's very down to Earth. Okay, now I must get to Daemon. He's tall, completley chiseled, with dark hair and stunning green eyes. Totally swoon-worthy. Who wouldn't want to have him as a next door neighbor? Probably anyone that gets on his bad side. As I stated earlier he's arrogant, condescending, rude and knows his way around an innuendo. But there is also another side of him that peeks out occasionally. He is fiercely protective especially when it comes to Dee and he can be nice when he wants to be but he doesn't choose to be nice very often. Which is great for the reader, I loved his barbed wire conversations with Katy, they added an thrill to the story.

I'm so glad I read this book. I have heard such great things about it and finally decided to see what everyone was talking about. Overall this was a fantastic, exciting read. After I finished reading I immediately had to go to Jennifer L. Armentrout's blog to read chapter 26 from Daemon's POV, a bonus from the Heroine Tournament. And yes it was really good. Since the book takes place in West Virginia there really isn't any world building to get into but we do get a lot of background info on the Luxen. I'm already ready to read Shadows (Lux #0.5) and Onyx (Lux #2) but it seems I will have to wait awhile for those.

Cover:
I like this cover of Obsidian. It's simple and it makes me want to pick up the book and find out what is going on with this couple. Plus the green goes with Daemon's eyes.

Review "If I Die" Rachel Vincent

If I Die (Soul Screamers, #5)
If I Die (Soul Screamers #5)
Publication Date: September 27, 2011
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback: 342 pgs

Summary:
Eastlake High is still reeling from the deaths of several teachers, things are starting to calm down in fact they have hired a new math teacher to fill the void left by the death of Mr Wesner. But the very gorgeous Mr Beck has a secret, he is not human in fact he is an Incubus and all the female students are practically drooling over him, including Emma. But Kaylee has bigger things to worry about she learns that she's dying, her borrowed lifeline has almost come to its end. To take her mind of the fact that she is dying Kaylee instead decides to focus her attention on Mr Beck. She soon discovers that he is feeding off her classmates and has left a lot destruction in his wake. Will Kaylee be able to get rid of Mr Beck before it's too late?

Review:
I have to say this is my favorite book in the Soul Screamers series, so far. This is an intense read for fans of the series. Kaylee is struggling to come to terms with the fact that she only has six days left to live. Instead of fixating on her impending death Kaylee decides to spend her time trying to save the girls at her school from the deadly gorgeous Mr Beck. She can't do anything about dying but she can try and solve one last problem and protect those she loves one last time. I have always liked seeing how Kaylee dealt with all the death around her. But this time around she has to come to terms with her own death. It was really sad to read as Kaylee realized some of the things she would never be able to do. I couldn't help but feel for her as she struggled to deal with her death. I was impressed with how she dealt with knowing her time had run out, again.

Kaylee gets help with her last mission from her friends, and Sabine. Everyone works together to try and figure out how to get rid of an Incubus. Just because Sabine is helping doesn't mean she's doing it for free or that she is going to be nice to Kaylee, even though she is dying. Sabine has one thing on her mind and since Kaylee will soon be gone she figures she will soon get what she wants. I still like Sabine. She is rude and extremely blunt but I love reading the scenes she appears in.We also get more Alec who is able to give Kaylee background info on Incubi. Then there is Nash. Things are still a little shaky between him and Kaylee but he wants to spend as much time with her as he can. And yeah we get more of Tod. He too helps as much as he can, in ways that are surprising. I won't say too much because that would take all the fun out of reading what happens in this action packed, heart breaking addition to the Soul Screamers series.

As usual there is a lot going on in If I Die. I couldn't get enough and was sad to see this book come to an end. The ending definitely left me wanting more and I really wish I didn't have to wait so long to read Before I Wake. If you haven't started this series yet then I highly suggest that you do. I'm thinking I may have to do a third reading of this awesome series.

Cover:
I think this is my least favorite cover out of the entire series. It just really doesn't speak to me and I would have liked to see a more swirly dress or something that made the cover more exciting.

Writing issues

I fully intended to have my review for If I Die posted today. I have it written and everything but I haven't typed it yet. For some reason it is much easier for me to write it out in a notebook first and then edit as I type it up.

When I first started blogging I typed my reviews as the thoughts came to me. But I found I spent a lot of my time staring at a nearly blank screen and wondering what now. I would get completely frustrated as I sat and stared and my thoughts remained blank, well at least as far as the review was concerned. When I started to use a notebook instead I realized that I found that my thoughts flowed a little easier. It might be because this is how I have always done most of my writing. I write it out long hand then type it up when I am done. I also found that if I write the review immediately after I read the book it much easier to sum up I how I felt about what I just read.

What I really need to learn to do is type up all my reviews and schedule them before hand instead of waiting until the night before I post them to type them. As it is I have two reviews written but not typed. In other words I need to get myself organized.

How do you write your reviews?

Why (7)

This week the question I have been thinking about is one I know many can relate to: Why do I want more books when I already have way too many sitting around waiting to be read?

I have been think about this question for awhile. As I look around at my overcrowded bookshelves I wonder why do I keep buying, getting more books when I have yet to read the ones I already have? For me I think it has to do with having books on hand for when I go through one of my book devouring states. Plus every time I hear about a great book or see a beautiful cover I feel like I have to have it.

There are many benefits to adding to my already giant pile of TBR books. When I finish my current read I don't have to go out or go online to get my next book. I have plenty of books sitting around just waiting to be read. I just have to go over and pick one up. No buying or much moving required. Plus with so many books on my TBR pile I have a huge variety of books at my disposal. I can pick something with vampires, fae, zombies, or witches, practically whatever I feel like reading I have somewhere on a shelf.  Luckily for me most of my books are for recreational reading, there are no looming deadlines hanging over my head adding pressure to an otherwise fun activity. So I get to pick any book I want, whichever one grabs my attention. Another benefit is that if I choose a book that I can't get into for whatever reason then I can just put it down and select another one.

Of course there are a few issues with having so many unread books. Looking at the piles of unread books can get a little overwhelming. It can be difficult to choose which book to read next since I obviously got them because they seemed like books I would really enjoy. Sometimes I wonder, how am I supposed to read all of these books? I calm myself down by realizing that my books aren't going anywhere and I have plenty of time to get them all read. I also feel bad that these books are just sitting there waiting to be read and reviewed. They need attention, and I know they will get that attention...someday. Lastly, another huge downside to having a huge TBR pile is...space. Most of my books are physical books, though I do have quite a few e-books as well. Finding space for them is not always easy but so far I have managed to find some place to put them.

How do you feel about wanting more books even though you may already have a massive TBR pile? How do you get through your TBR pile?

Review "My Soul to Steal" by Rachel Vincent

My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers, #4)
My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers #4)
Publication Date: January 4, 2011
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback: 343 pgs

Summary:
In My Soul to Steal Kaylee and Nash are starting to recover from the terrible events that happened during My Soul to Keep. While Kaylee comes to terms with what happened with Nash and is deciding how she feels about him, a new complication arises. Sabine a mara comes to town and just happens to be Nash's ex, who has come to town to get Nash back. Meanwhile teachers at the school are dying and the students at Eastlake are turning against each other. The school is descending into chaos and it's up to Kaylee to figure out what's going on and how to stop it before the craziness escalates any further.

Review:
As I was reading My Soul to Steal I felt really bad for Kaylee. Her world fell apart and she's trying to figure out what to do next. She's not sure if she should forgive Nash so they can move forward or let him go and move on. She has a difficult decision to make and things get more complicated when Sabine Campbell comes to town to reclaim her ex, Nash. Kaylee is usually very calm and collected even in the face of danger but Sabine has a way of pushing her buttons and Kaylee can't help but react. Though Sabine is definitely tougher than she is, Kaylee refuses to let Sabine walk all over her. She pushes back when she needs to. I liked this side of Kaylee. As she decides how she feels about Nash, Kaylee is determined to find out why the kids at school are turning on each other. Plus, there's all the dying teachers to worry about. What is a teenage bean sidhe to do? Get to the bottom of it, of course.

Nash, Tod, and Alec are all back and this time around the group dynamics are a little different. Nash and Kaylee are still figuring out if they should be together. Kaylee and Tod have been spending more time together as she works through her issues with Nash. I also noticed that Tod seems to be more protective of Kaylee than in the past. In this installment we get background info on Alec, the guy Kaylee saved in My Soul to Keep. Alec is not all that he appears but he has come to be a confidant for Kaylee. I like the addition of Alec to the series. Since he spent so much time in the Netherworld he is able to provide Kaylee with valuable information. Add to this already weird mix, Sabine and things are bound to get interesting. Though Sabine has come to town for only one reason I couldn't help but like her. She's very blunt and says whatever is on her mind. She might be abrasive but I liked her anyway.

There is a lot going on in this installment of the Soul Screamers. Again I was quite surprised by how everything went down. A few new characters are introduced adding to the already great cast that I have come to enjoy reading about in this highly addictive series. This is my second time reading this book and I loved it just as much as I did the first time around.

Cover:
For me this cover is okay not great but not horrible either. As I stated in another review I'm not a fan of the constantly changing girls on the covers of this series. The blue blends in a little too much with the background and the dress doesn't stand out either.

Review "My Soul To Keep" by Rachel Vincent

My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers, #3)
My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers #3)
Publication Date: June 1, 2010
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback; 296 pgs

Summary:
In My Soul to Keep, one of the Netherworld's most dangerous and addictive substances finds its way into the hands of Kaylee's very human classmates. Kaylee and Nash  need to try and figure out how Demon's breath made its way into their world. And how to stop the supply before it can do too much damage to the students who have gotten their hands on it. But as Kaylee struggles to figure out how to stop the influx of Demon's breath, she misses vital clues about someone close to her. In the third heart pounding installment of the Soul Screamers, watch as Kaylee tries to stop this dangerously addictive drug and then starts to come to terms with the aftermath of its hazardous effects.

Review:
Kaylee is again caught up in another supernatural situation. Which lets face it, if she weren't what would be the fun of reading this book? This time the problem is Demon's breath. Yeah! That's as gross as it sounds. Kids are actually getting high and addicted to the breath of a Demon. Eww! Not something many of use are getting in line too try. Even though finding out where the Demon's breath is coming from may be hard to figure out Kaylee is determined to protect her classmates from a substance that they know nothing about. I like this aspect of Kaylee's personality, she sees a problem and then tries to fix it. She doesn't shy away from doing something even though it might be scary or difficult. She goes up against danger because it would bother her to just sit back while others are walking into trouble. But we also see another side of Kaylee. She has doubts about her relationship with Nash but pushes them aside because she doesn't want to lose him and doesn't know how to voice these issues to him. I think this made Kaylee more relateable. She's not perfect or claiming to be she struggles daily with many different issues.

What can I say about Nash...hmm. We see a different side to his personality. I can't say much without giving away what happened but let's just say he is not the Nash I have come to enjoy reading about. But if you want to know more you'll have to read the book to find out. Plus if I told you then it would spoil all the fun of discovering what happened on your own. Nash does agree to help Kaylee figure out where the Demon's breath is coming from but he seems more reluctant to help then he has in the past.

I realized in previous reviews I have neglected to mention Kaylee's horrible cousin Sophie. Sophie is a mean girl who finds every opportunity to make snide comments about Kaylee, especially her time at the mental health ward. Sophie, unlike her cousin is human and has no idea about the supernatural world around her or how many times Kaylee has saved her from some horrible outcome. Tod also makes an appearance in My Soul to Keep, though he's not in it a lot. He is still dealing with what happened with Addison in My Soul to Save, and it has not been easy for him. But when Kaylee and Nash need his help, he's there to do what he can.

This is an action packed story filled with twists, turns, and curve balls that I never saw coming. But that's where the fun comes in, not knowing what's going to happen next with these characters I have grown very attached to. There is also death but how could there not be when the main characters are bean sidhe's and a grim reaper. I think a little death is inevitable. If you haven't had a chance to read this series yet, you should. It's a exciting world filled with great characters that draws you in the moment you start reading.

Cover:
I really like the cover of My Soul to Keep. The vivid purple makes the cover stand out from those around it. Plus I love the swirly dresses that I have come to associate with this series. I also really like the font used for the title. My one criticism is that I am not a fan of having different girls on each cover. If it's supposed to be Kaylee then I'm pretty sure her looks don't change with each book. I'm not a fan of this inconsistency.

Why (6)

This week the question I have been thinking about is Why do I prefer a series over a stand alone?

For me the answer is simply. I love getting attached to characters and watching them triumph over the supernatural obstacles that get thrown at them in each book. We get to watch them grow and develop while they come into their abilities. Plus, I like the character development that can be achieved in a series. They go through repeated heartbreak only to find that they have grown stronger in the face of all the difficulties they have come up against. I also like anticipating what is going to happen in the next installment of a characters supernaturally charged life. Though usually I'm wrong and surprised by what actually happens next. Complex worlds can develop over time and new information and characters can be introduced.

Yes, I realize that most of what I mentioned above could happen in a stand alone but I don't get as attached to the characters in a stand alone as I do in a series. I think that's my main issue, I love seeing how a character will handle the next supernatural situation that comes up. But with a stand alone it's a one and you're done. With a stand alone I feel as though you only get a brief look into a character's life and then the door is closed on that world.

As I look around at my bookshelves I realize that most of the books I own are part of a series, though I do have the occasional stand alone mixed in with my other books.

So where do you fall on this issue? Do you prefer a series or are you into stand alone novels?

Review "My Soul to Save" by Rachel Vincent

My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers #2)

Summary:
In the second installment in the Soul Screamers series the craziness that has become Kaylee's life continues. This time around Kaylee reluctantly agrees to try and help Tod get back the soul of his ex Addison, who just happens to be a super famous teen star. Though she agrees to help, Kaylee realizes the situation is more complicated than she thought. To even come close to getting Addison's soul back, Kaylee Nash, and Tod will have to travel to the Netherworld. The Netherworld is far from safe. Will Kaylee be able to survive her journey to the Netherworld and will she be able to help get Addison's soul back?

Review:
In My Soul to Save we once again get to see Kaylee face danger  in order to help others. When Tod comes to Kaylee for help she agrees but only after much pleading and her sense of justice also comes in to play. By agreeing to help Addison, Kaylee is not only putting herself in danger but also Nash. I have noticed that Kaylee has this deep seated need to help people that are in trouble. Which, of course, in her world inevitably leads to danger. Along with helping others get out of toxic situations Kaylee's also learning more about her bean sidhe nature. One of my favorite parts of these books has been the humor that Kaylee uses to get her through dangerous situations. I also liked watching as Kaylee and Nash's relationship develops and grows.

Nash shows his protective side in My Soul to Save. Though he is protective of Kaylee, Nash doesn't try and tell her what to do. I'm not sure she would listen if he did. If she agrees too help someone he will go along to make sure she stays safe and knows what she is getting herself into. I would like to know what Nash is like when he is not with Kaylee so I'm hoping one day a novella will be written from his POV.

In this novel we see much more of Tod, since the story centers on a girl from his past. It was interesting to see how far Tod was willing to go for someone he cares about. Plus I liked getting to see more of his personality. One of my favorite things about this series has been getting to read about Tod. I love the interactions between Tod and Nash. They don't get along and the fighting between them is fun to read about.

We also learn more about Kaylee's world. The Netherworld plays a prominent role in My Soul to Save, so we get more insight into the creatures and other things that dwell in this awful place. Kaylee is getting bean sidhe lessons from Harmony, Nash's and Tod's mom. Through these lessons the reader learns more about what bean sidhe's can do. As with the first Soul Screamers, Rachel Vincent continues to draw me in with the descriptions of this amazing world. If I can't see the world and characters in my head then I tend to have problems staying interested in the story. Luckily, I have had no such issues with this series. If you hadn't realized it yet I have been really enjoying reading this series.

Cover:
I love the color on this cover, it's one of my favorite shades of blue. Plus the title repeating in wispy tendrils all over looks really different too! I also really like the font that is used for the title.
