Review of "Poison Princess" by Kresley Cole

Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1)
Poison Princess (Arcana Chronicles #1)
Publication Date: October 2, 2012
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Hardcover 369 pgs
Summary:
She could save the world—or destroy it.
Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.
But she can’t do either alone.
With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?
Who can Evie trust?
As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side.(Goodreads)

Review:
I wasn't sure what to expect form this book. From the synopsis it sounded really interesting. I have to say I was not disappointed. This book had a lot going on such as visions, an Apocalypse, magic, a touch of romance and of course lots of danger. Though there was a lot going on I wasn't ever really confused. I thought the story flowed really well. I was hooked from the first chapter and didn't want to put the book down until I was done reading. I liked the contrast of life before and after the apocalyptic event. I t was interesting to see just how much life had changed for Evie. Poison Princess is a great story full of complicated characters and an interesting mix of magic and danger with a few twists thrown in to make the story that much better.
I really liked Evie. She's sweet, naive, and a little unsettled because of her hallucinations. The things she sees are frightening but when they come true her life changes forever. On top of the visions she's also started to hear voices. There is only one person who can help her and she's not sure this person is still even alive. Though Evie isn't used to having to fight for survival she'd do anything to make sure her and her mother survive including turning to a guy she's not sure she can trust. There is something about Jackson that draws Evie in and at the same time makes her want to run away. The two have a complicated relationship that had me hooked and wanting more.
Another main character is Jackson Deveaux. He's mysterious, dangerous and did I mention...hot. What I wouldn't give to know what is going on in his head. Jackson can be very hot and cold. One minute he seems to care about Evie and the next he seems to act as though she's a burden. On the plus side he seems to be very dependable with really good survival instincts. Sometimes I really like Jackson and at other times I think he's a bit of a jerk. I'm definitely interested to know more about him.

Cover:
I'm really liking this cover. I love the darkness and destruction in the background. It contrasts well with the the awesomely dressed characters on the cover.

Blood-Kissed Sky (Darkness Before Dawn Trilogy, #2)

Most Anticipated (17)

Ever After (The Hollows, #11)

This week my Most Anticipated Release of the Week is, Ever After by Kim Harrison. Though I liked A Perfect Blood I was a little upset with how whinny Rachel was for the first half of the book. The second half of the story was able to redeem the book for me and I completely devoured it. I, like many other Kim Harrison fans have been eagerly awaiting the next book in The Hollows series. I'm really looking forward to reading about Rachel and Trent's evolving relationship. Will they move past friends or not? I don't mind if they do, I think it would be good for both characters. Plus, I'm hoping to get more of Jenks as he's one of my favorite characters. He's insightful but full of crazy sayings that make me laugh. I'm also wondering how Rachel will fix the mess she made in the ever after. It seems like it's going to be an exciting book, and I can't  wait to get my hands on it!
Summary:
The ever after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing... for the worse.

While saving the world is important, it isn't Rachel's only motivation. There's also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, setting off a chain reaction of unfortunate events. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It's also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He's already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn't give herself up soon, they'll die.

But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frightening skills of her own, and she isn't going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She's also got a surprise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she's going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones... and prevent an apocalypse before it's too late. Or, at least that's the plan. (Goodreads)

Ever After (The Hollows #11), Kim Harrison. Expected Publication: January 22, 2013: Harper Voyager. Hardcover 512 pgs.

That's what I'm looking forward to this week. Any books that you are Anticipating this week?

My latest read isn't super steamy so I want back to Personal Demons which had a Swoon I wanted to share.

"I lose myself in his touch, and I swear my head and my heart are both about to explode. No other kiss has ever felt like this. It's electric in its intensity, making every nerve ending buzz. His lips part and I taste cinnamon, breathe it in, and it feels like it fills me, like part of him is seeping right into my body, making me whole." SWOON #YABound

That's what made me Swoon this week! What about you, what made you Swoon?

I choose a teaser from my latest read, Personal Demons. It was good, I'm just hoping book 2 is better.

Personal Demons (Personal Demons, #1)
"He starts the engine, but I'm leaning on his window. And he's staring at me. I lean in more, close enough to feel his heat. He starts to lean toward me, and my heart feels like some wild thing trapped in my chest, struggling to get loose."

Lisa Desrochers, Personal Demons (Personal Demons #1), pg 99

I always seem to go over the 2 sentences, sometimes I just can't help it. If you have teaser leave a link so I can check it out.

Most Anticipated (16)

Gates of Paradise (Blue Bloods, #7)

My Most Anticipated Release of the Week is, Gates of Paradise. As soon as I finished Lost in Time I was eager to get my hands on the next book to see what was going to happen next. But I had to wait a very long time for Gates of Paradise to come out, over a year. The waiting is never fun but at last Gates of Paradise is almost out! I want to know what happens with Schuyler, Jack, and Mimi since the last book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Gates of Paradise is the last book in this series and I'm a little sad to know that this is the end.

Summary:
Schuyler Van Alen is running out of time. The Dark Prince of Hell is storming the Gates of Paradise, intent on winning the heavenly throne for good. This time he has his greatest angels by his side, Abbadon and Azrael—Jack and Mimi Force, as they are known in the Coven.

Or so he thinks. Even as Lucifer assigns Jack and Mimi the tasks of killing their true loves, the Force twins secretly vow to defeat the Dark Prince once and for all. But how far will Mimi and Jack go to conceal their real loyalties?

Meanwhile, former vampire Bliss Llewellyn has joined forces with Lawson, the greatest wolf of the underworld, to free his people from their imprisonment in Hell. As they struggle against impossible odds, an ancient message, woven into the very fabric of time, reveals just how much depends on the success of their mission.

Lucifer seeks the key to the Gate of Promise, and when Schuyler is taken captive and delivered straight to Hell, she must make an unthinkable choice—the same one the archangel Michael was forced to make during the Crisis in Rome. Will Schuyler find the strength to do what he could not?

The epic, heartbreaking Blue Bloods series comes to a close with this final novel about staggering courage, unbearable sacrifice, and the immortality of true love.

Gates of Paradise (Blue Bloods #7), Melissa de la Cruz. Expected Publication: January 15, 2013: Hyperion, Hardcover 368 pgs.

That's what I'm looking forward to this week. Any books that you need to get your hands on?

My Swoon this week is from Crimson Frost. I haven't finished it yet, but right now it's quite intense. The Swoony scenes totally break up the tension.;)
Before I could respond, the Spartan's arms tightened around me, and he lowered his lips to mine. For a moment I was lost--completely, utterly lost. The fell of Logan's lips on mine, the strong circle of his arms around me, the way he smelled, his long, lean body pressing against my own, the warmth of his feeling for me streaming into my own body. Everything about the Spartan overloaded my senses, forming a soft, dizzying rush that made me feel like I could float away, like I could soar through the air, like I could do absolutely  anything, even touch the stars. SWOON #YABound
That's what made me Swoon this week. So what made you Swoon?

Review: Matched by Ally Condie

Matched (Matched, #1)
Matched ( Matched #1)
Ally Condie
Publication Date: September 20, 2011
Publisher: Speak
Paperback 369 pgs

Summary:
Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.(Goodreads)
Review:
The main character, Cassia is a 16 year old girl who is looking forward to her future. But after an incident with her Matching ceremony her life starts to change. The glitch causes Cassia to question all that goes on around her. How much of her life is hers and how much of what she does is because of the Society? I liked Cassia. She just doesn't one day start rebelling against the Society. The change in her is gradual as she begins to realize how much her life is controlled by the Society. Which of courser made her believable to me. Her world is slowly shifting and it takes her time to adjust to what she is beginning to understand about her life. There is a bit of a love triangle but it seems as though she has chooses which boy she truly wants to be with early on in the book.
The other characters Xander and Ky are Cassia's love interests. Both seem to be great guys. Each boy plays a part in her life and she doesn't want to have to give either of them up. We learn about Ky and why Cassia is drawn to him. But I don't think that we learned too much about Xander. We see him through Cassia's eyes so we only find out what she knows about him. Not what he does or thinks when they aren't together.
The world Ally Condie created in Matched is nearly perfect. But there are cracks and they are starting to show especially to the people who know to look. People live long, happy healthy lives. It's a life that is without complications. But it's also a life without true freedom. For the choices they make are small compared to the choices that are made for them.
I've had Matched for awhile but I was waiting until Reached came out to start the trilogy. I liked this book but there were some things I felt like I read before. Citizens being controlled by the new government  A main character realizing things aren't as idyllic as they once thought. Trying to find out how to fix things when everything is controlled by the leaders in society. There were also a ton of things that I liked. I liked that Cassia had a strong family that was there for her. Her grandfather was a huge part of her life and he gave her ways to fight even though she may not have realized at the time.Though I liked Matched, I'm hoping that the next books are a little more intense.
Cover:
I really like the paperback cover for Matched. It's simplistic yet definitely eye catching. It's shimmery and very pretty. It shows Cassia in the dress when her life first began to change. Plus the bubble shows how she feels, trapped by the world she lives in.

This week's teaser is from my latest read Poison Princess. This book had a lot going on but I found it refreshing and completely entertaining.

Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1)
"We stared at each other for long moments. He took his time surveying me, just as he had the first time he'd ever seen me. How different I appeared now. My looks had gone from well-kempt cheerleader to apocalyptic disasterpiece."

Most Anticipated (15)

Blood Prophecy (Drake Chronicles, #6)

My Most Anticipated Release of the Week is, Blood Prophecy by Alyxandra Harvey. It's the last book in the Drake Chronicles and I'm so sad that this series is coming to an end. It started off light and fun and then gradually each book became more intense then the one before. Some of my favorite characters are from this series, such as Quinn, Hunter, and who can forget Lucy. Though I'm ready to find out how this series ends I wish there had been more books about the other Drake brothers.
Summary:
In the thrilling conclusion of the Drake Chronicles, love and loyalties will be tested ... and proven once and for all.
Solange Drake has been officially crowned Queen of the Vampires, fulfilling the centuries old prophecy that foretold the rise to power of a daughter born to an ancient vampire line. Except Solange's thoughts and actions are no longer her own—she's been slowly being possessed by the spirit of Viola, the first daughter born into the Drake line, since her bloodchange. And instead of uniting the vampire tribes under the rule of an ancient daughter as the prophecy predicted, Viola would rather destroy them all and enslave humans in a personal vendetta for the devastation both wrought to her life centuries ago. Can Solange break her hold in time to save everyone she loves from a vampire civil war, hunter attack, and each other? Not everyone will survive the prophecy . . . perhaps not even her.(Goodreads)

Blood Prophecy (Drake Chronicles #6), Alyxandra Harvey, Expected Publication: January 8, 2013: Walker Childrens, Hardcover, 496 pgs.

That's what I'm looking forward to this week. What book are you excited about this week?
